1994 Robin Medley VI
Details
I’d been looking for a Medley for a long time, and these are well known for their extremely high quality and figured woods. While this one doesn’t have the crazy flamed maple neck like I’ve seen on others (and still hope to have someday), this one is a Medley VI, which has a bound body and a thick quilted maple top.
Stock pickups are a Seymour Duncan Custom and a Hot Rails in H/S configuration, with no coil tap in sight. The bridge is a Kahler Steeler, which is on par with an OFR in terms of quality but uses US Imperial measurements instead of metric like Floyds and other bridges do - kind of unique, but don’t ever lose the trem arm!
The body is quite large in size, with long horns and a pretty heavy feel. The binding is also extremely tall, I suppose they took the saying “everything is bigger in Texas” and applied it to guitar making! That applies to the frets as well, which are absolutely gigantic, and especially as I’m used to smaller frets I can feel my fingers catching on these quite a bit when sliding around - something I will have to adapt to while playing this one. This guitar also has non-locking Sperzel tuners - another USA made component on a guitar made entirely out of USA parts and suppliers. In fact, I think the Schaller strap buttons might be the only non USA part on the whole guitar, which is pretty cool.
This is one of the nicer Medley’s I’ve seen, and they don’t come up for sale often - I see why now. I’m still after a few more Robins and if they were more common, I’d have several for sure, these are great guitars.
